Carrieres de Lumieres in Les Baux de Provence is not mentioned in either of Rick's France or Provence guidebooks, yet it is the #1 TripAdvisor attraction in Provence. Anyone been there?
We were there this past summer and really enjoyed it.
We visited in early June 2013 and, in a region filled with delights for the senses, it was among our favorite places. The artists featured that year were Monet, Renoir, and Chagall....so it was a colorful, stunning, and memorable experience. Don't miss it!
We were there in 2014 and absolutely loved it. It was a pretty amazing show.
I saw the Klimt exhibit there in 2014. I was surrounded by the light and color and trying to keep my balance as the floor swirled with patterns while I walked around. It was absolutely incredible. Austrian waltzes and opera music played during the show, which was about 40 minutes long. The quarry was very dark, apart from the light given off by the show. I thoroughly enjoyed myself.
Go! Absolutely, if you are nearby, go. In my RS Provence book (10th Ed, Nov 2013), the Carriere des Lumiere is listed, in fact as a "2" site, with 3 being best, and 1 being the lowest rating RS would award a given site. It's a spectacular thing to see, we were there in Sept 2014 as well, and saw the Klimt exhibition. It was a cool respite from a warm day in Les Baux, and really stunning and unique. We watched a short Jean Cocteau film, which was a special side exhibit, a truly special setting for art.
Highly recommended!
100% worth your time and like nothing I've ever seen before. This year they are doing Marc Chagall - I wish I could return to see it.
In the 11th edition of the Provence book, it's on p. 81, now listed as a 1-star site, of a range that actually goes from 0 to 3. My colleague highly recommended it to me for my last trip, but I didn't make it. I also would consider Marc Chagall a good reason to go: http://carrieres-lumieres.com/en/home.
We were here a couple of years ago when Van Gogh and Monet were being featured. I had absolutely no idea what to expect; it was truly awe-some! It is quite a unique and wonderful experience and I would highly recommend going.
Thank you to all posters on this thread for drawing my attention to this spectacle. I shall be in Les Baux for one night in mid-June and would love to see the Chagall exhibit. I'm pre-booked into L'Hôtel la Reine Jeanne. Can anyone who knows Les Baux tell me how far Les Carrières is from that hotel? I shall be on foot and not sure of the time of my arrival or departure. Is it essential to pre-book? Would soon after opening be the quietest time? I see a combined ticket with entry to the Château is available but valid for only one day so I couldn't visit there the previous evening without buying separate entry tickets. Is the Château itself worth a visit on a weekday when no special event is featured?
