Last year we stayed in the Latin Quarter, five nights and loved it,we would like suggestions on another area to stay.We saw most of the important sights in the area and Versailles.
Thanks
Mike
Hi Mike,
You might want to try #1 or #4 arrondissements on the other side of the river for another experience of this beautiful city. Or if you're open to not staying in the center of the city, the Sacre Coeur area has it's own fun culture.
I would suggest the 4th (Marais). It's still central, but will give you a different feeling than the 5th.
We stayed in the Marais last year and found it noisy and crowded (though the apartment was fine and quiet). Narrow sidewalks filled with people all going faster than us because they knew what they were doing! ;-) We were only a block from Rue de Rivoli, maybe too close to the action.
Ile St-Louis is beautiful and central, more expensive than most other neighborhoods. Conventional wisdom would suggest a central location, maybe St-Germain, but if you've seen the major sights you might want to branch out, experience a quieter neighborhood, save some money, and let the Metro whisk you where you're going each day. We spent nine nights in an apartment on Rue du Chateau in the 14th, around the corner from the Pernety Metro stop, short walks to the Gare Montparnasse and Rue Daguerre market, lots of restaurants and services within a few blocks. A better choice might be near a Metro stop where two lines intersect so you have more choices for rapid transit. Consider the "teen" arrondissements.
Mike, the first time we went we stayed in the 5th, second time in the 4th, and that was all good. As Dick points out, the 4th is busy, very popular, but lots of people and mostly tourists-I think that the next time we will be in the 9th or the 14th, but we will not be central-too much to see elsewhere in that great city.
