I will be in Paris for just a few days in mostly the touristy areas. I have not been to Paris since 1991, long time! Can anyone give me some favorite places that are easy to find near the popular areas (Eiffel Tower, Notre Dame, Louvre etc)? Maybe some favorite things to try? We love sweets, ice cream, bread and cheese but hardly ever eat them so this will be a treat! I suppose we will need some healthy food too, salads and chicken. I remember a good gravy with chicken served over a layered roll/biscuit the last time we were here that was wonderful! Thanks again!
My favorite, macrons! Never had a bad one in Paris. :)
One word - crepes! And they're everywhere so easy to find.
Bread, baguettes, pain de campagne, brioche and a good kouign amann - oh, and a good rotisserie chicken.
Nothing beats a kouign amann.
If you love ice cream, then it's gotta be Berthillon on Île Saint-Louis! A perfect place to reward yourself after braving the crowds of Notre Dame just across the bridge
David Lebovitz has many recommendations:

Clotilde Dusoulier has her favorites for croissants and baguettes:
Thank you!! I will be working on losing weight before I go just to enjoy them all. LOL!
Aux marveillieux de Fred ... odd name but a must. Shops in Marais, the 7th and Latin Quarter. Morsels of heaven.
Oh, I've had some mediocre macarons in Paris (don't buy them at neighborhood bakeries!). My favorites are from Pierre Marcolini (there's a shop near the Opera). Other very good ones are Ladurée and Pierre Hermé. These places also have some of the very best chocolates in the world. Go to Angelina's (across from the Tuilleries) for the very best hot chocolate and amazing pastries. I've found that basic pastries - croissants, pain chocolat, etc - are yummy at just about any bakery. In the morning, when you pick up fresh ones for breakfast you can also buy very good sandwiches for lunch. Bread is good even from the supermarket - and that's a good place to buy cheese too, ask for tastes before you buy. I've never been a big fan of French ice cream. Bertillion is what everyone raves about, and there can be long lines at their shop on Ile St Louis, but last time I was in Paris (3-4 yrs ago), I saw a number of shops selling Bertillion in other neighborhoods.
The Mont Blanc pastry at Angelina’s.....wow! And the cereales bread loaf at Eric Kayser’s......his boulongeries have great pastries for breakfast.....try the almond croissant as well as the almond/chocolate one....yum
Get another partner!
We loved the almond croissants at Boulangerie Heurtier near Rue de Rivoli in Le Marais. They were served warm and were sinfully delicious. My other favorite was the kouign amann at Le Pain au Naturel, just down the road from the Catacombs.
didan - oh, the Merveilleux de Fred! We've had them in NY, Paris and Brussels! I hope to get to the one in London just because. They are delicious and they are SUPER sweet! Also - check out Angelina - http://www.angelina-paris.fr/en/6-the-pastries Last year I had this raspberry concoction and it was almost to beautiful to eat - the details - the gold flakes, the 'dewdrops' on the berries...mmm mmm.
My favourite pastry in Paris is a pain aux raisins.
Looks like a snail/cinnamon bun; but has a lovely custard in the centre and many raisins.
You can get them everywhere, and I've never met a bad one.
hey peridot
while you are getting your berthillon ice cream on ile de louis stop at la cure gourmande 55 rue saint louis en l'ile. bought too much LOL to send to family back home on the big island of hawaii, which they loved. stop at le cuisine de philippe near luxemborg garden/musee de luxemborg for their sweet souflles. enjoy
aloha
kouign amann. These are tough to find in Paris -- we had them every day in Brittany -- very yummy. For ice cream, Berthillon is excellent but so is the chain Grom to my surprise. I eat my weight in chocolate eclairs and Tarte Citron in Paris. We have tried all the different pastries, but always come back to Tart Citron.
We always seem to go into a La Cure Gourmande when we are in France, buy way too many of the (IMO) expensive cookies, remind ourselves that last time we thought they were only OK, end up carrying smushed cookies and toffee that'll pull out my fillings in our bag and ask ourselves...why did we forget and go here again? And I'm sure next month when we are in Provence, we will do the same thing over.
Visit any Eric Kayser location ... you will not be disappointed.

Can second Pierre Marcolini for macaron and chocolate. I'm looking forward to holding my own personal macaron-off between Marcolini, Ladurée and Hermé when I visit in October.

Any idea why their prices are in dollars and not euros?

The commenter linked to a menu from one of their US branches - but they are genuinely French.
