Well - surprise, surprise -- one direct flight a day from EWR to CDG

Just discovered that United has one direct flight from EWR to CDG - a day. Yikes -- guess - one will have to attempt to book that flight at least six months in advance.

Seems many of the airlines fall in the same catagory.

I thought there would be more direct flights ..

Well, there might have been a few more flights before the pandemic, but JFK has always been the main gateway into the New York metro area from Paris.

I’m on one of those United flights in April - the plane is still only about half full in all cabins. I was also shocked at the limited options, but as a United customer, it still worked for me.

Hoping things are better by 2023 - I spoke to a travel agent I know - you can start booking 10 months in advance - but if more people are traveling - could be tough to get that Newark flight - might have to travel to JFK - a distance for me …

For many years, United has had two flights a day between EWR and CDG. Schedules everywhere have been trimmed a bit, but I believe United will once again have the two CDG flights as transatlantic travel demand returns this summer.

Just a word about "direct" vs. "nonstop." Unless the travel industry lingo has changed, a "direct" flight can involve intermediate stops; it just means you don't have to change planes. Only a "nonstop" is a flight that takes off once and doesn't land again until reaching the destination you want.

What Tocard said .

Anyway, I thought you didn't want to go to JFK?

Yes, all non-stop flights are direct, but not all direct flights are non-stop.

Well - regarding JFK -I may have spoken too soon - or written too soon.

If I have to travel to JFK - I will -- I did some research last night and found some car services in the town we live in.

It is a big expense to have to travel to JFK. I might have to cut some corners elsewhere - economy seats as opposed to premium economy seats - fortunately the flight is not terribly long -- 15 hours to Shanghai -- that was a long flight!

I will begin looking at flights from Newark and apartments in Paris at the end of this year -- seems so crazy for a trip in October of 2023!

Whatever happens - I am sure it will be ok - always the unexpected - even in the planning process - but fortunately, you are here to help me!

Interesting - that a direct flight - could land before reaching its destination and you don't have to deplane.

I have never experienced this on a nonstop flight - to Europe.

Hope indeed that United returns to two flights a day to CDG.

I think I remember that United had only one flight a day to Shanghai.

if you are wanting United, EWR is their hub and has been for several years now

We are on the United 6:45pm flight out of EWR in April — they just changed it from the 787-10 Dreamliner to the larger 777-300ER. Either way, it was not, and is not full, but thinking they wanted increased capacity as travel demand intensifies. I booked back in Oct/Nov, but obviously Omicron caused a major lull in travel bookings so hard to say how far in advance you need to book. I’m seeing prices go way up on all our hotels, etc., so if you see a good fare you might want to grab it.

Is one daily flight a problem? It's not a uncommon frequency for transatlantic flights and as long as that flight works does it matter if there are more flights or not?

Of course you've never experienced that on a nonstop flight, if it had landed somewhere it wouldn't have been a non stop flight :-) Joking aside, direct flights that are not nonstop are getting much rarer as planes have longer and longer range. But there are still some exemples where airlines make a stop along the way in order to be able to get a few more passengers.
