My husband and I plan to be in Lille the second weekend in September. I would like to have suggestions on what to see and do in a day and a half. Also any recommendations on hotels that are in safe locations for walking to dinner?
Hi there! I will be going to Lille for ten days at Christmas time. Hotels---I'm staying at the Hotel Lille Europe between the two train stations. The reviews are great and supposedly it's just a quick walk to the centre ville. I got an excellent deal. As far as sites, it seems as if there's plenty. La Grande Place of course is the place to see for ambiance. And the art museum is also supposedly one of the best in France.
Maybe we can compare notes.
Sorry for you to say that the huge Lille Flea Market is during the first weekend of September and the European Heritage Days the third weekend. If you like shopping, Lille is the place to go and fun to explore too. It houses a few interesting museums like the birthplace of Charles de Gaulle and the already mentioned museum of fine arts. http://en.lilletourism.com/
Never visited it but think can be interesting are La Piscine and Villa Cavrois, to reach with a tram in nearby Roubaix. Lens has a branche museum of the Louvre.
The Art Museum is interesting, and often there is a protest demonstration out front, across the plaza! Fun to watch. One interesting restaurant is the Melting Pot. Pancook, out near the Catholic University of Lille, is great as well.
Alexander, do you have business? It's hard to imagine ten days there. Maybe you can finally provide this board with specific reports on direct bus or train trips from Lille to Bruges. (i.e. NOT via Brussels,)
Tim, no. I go on my Christmas vacation yearly to a different part of France. I'm going to be visiting the Nord Pas-de-Calais region by visiting many areas and also venturing into Belgium. I have visited Bruges before but plan on going back.
