I recently came across a website on which you could look up any street and find a history of the significant buildings, with photos. I can't find the website anymore (I think it was a french website) but it was fascinating. I wonder if any of you know?

I don't know which site you found but try these:
It is in French only. Google also Pavillon de l'Arsenal Paris for further info on architecture and urbanism. The Pavillon itself is free to enter and is very interesting for city planners and architects. Nice quiet place .... You will likely be the only visitors.
