Any recommendation for a web site for purchasing train tickets for travel within France? Coming up with different ones...SNCF, Rail Europe, Trainline, etc.. Pros / cons on using any of these?
sncf runs the trains; the others are middlemen; where possible always buy from the people who actually run the trains.
Rail Europe and Trainline are travel agencies selling train ticket. Use SNCF, the people who actually run the trains.
Try SNCF first. They should have the most up-to-date info and best price.
Sometimes SNCF can be finicky with American credit cards. If SNCF doesn’t work for you, then try Trainline (a reseller) who will charge you a small fee but has a reliable user interface.
I’ve used SNCF a number of times successfully; however, the last time I used it (before the pandemic) it kept rejecting my card and I finally gave up and purchased from Trainline.
Lately I've been using Trainline because they have been cheaper, even with the 75cent fee*. It's also a lot more user friendly than SNCF connect - even if you speak French SNCF always feels like a lottery.
- I think it's because they fix their exchange rates 3 monthly. If the rate is favourable on the day they fix the rate, you win
I agree about Trainline. Usually the source is the best to use but SNCF has become not just fiddly but downright confuddling.
Indeed, last year's "enhancement" of the SNCF site made it clunky and annoying. I use Trainline almost exclusively for trains in France.
The Trainline is a pretty user-friendly website, but I've found no problems at all booking through SNCF Connect. The English version is clear and easy to navigate, plus you can add your e-ticket to your phone.
We use both SNCF-Concect and Trainline. We have had no issues with either one.
