Wearing white in the south of France during September?

Is that a faux pas? We will be in Nice next week, then touring around Provence, including Avignon but mostly in the small towns. In Florida where I live, it’s not gauche!

What kind of garments? I always have a white tee shirt in my travel clothes as well as a white sunshirt. White pants I would not wear to travel in no matter what time of year because I would get them too dirty too fast. I pack light and sink wash so no way am I taking something that I only might get one wear out of before it was soiled. I want my bottoms to last for 3-4 wearings.

That sounds about right. I’ve got white blouses but also a pair of white slacks. I’ll take a Tide pen and hope for the best. But… other than the possibility of stains, is it unfashionable to wear white slacks?

I don't think anyone notices what you wear.
Just be sure to be clean, and wear appropriate clothes, ie: no offensive logos on tshirts, that kind of thing.
Just wear what is comfortable for you!, and have lovely time in France.

Well, I probably can't be counted on to give fashionable wardrobe advice, lol. I'm one that wears specific athletic shoes to keep my feet in shape for 5-10 mile walking days...no matter what the occasion. Also, I wear jeans which most French women of my age and weight would not wear.

I visited the Provence area in October 2019, spending about 2 weeks out and about with a group tour (bases were Aix-en-Provence and Arles) and felt like it was a very casual area. I have not been to Nice.

I wore white pants on my October 2021 trip to Nice just about every day. No issue at all, it was perfectly appropriate. Pair with animal print top and you'll fit right in.

Wear white if you want to. The no white after Labor Day is an American thing.

And misunderstood as well. It was no white shoes after Labor Day, had nothing to do with hats, gloves or clothing.

You can look as French as possible, speak perfect French but your nationality will be given away as soon as that receipt paper prints on the credit card machine.
Wear what you want.

Similar to southern France, I just returned from Italy, and we saw a lot of everything. But on the Amalfi Coast, many people were wearing white - tops and/or pants, dresses. Also, lots of solid bright colors. In the northern cities I didn’t see nearly as much white.

I remember watching and wondering why Mom was putting her white shoes and handbags on the top shelf and asking why. Labor Day was the answer. This was Cleveland in the early 50s. Does the “rule” still apply here in the US? I guessed it was a Midwest thing back then but I’m the last person to ever consult on issues of fashion.

All, I had no idea that this was such a provocative question that would elicit such hilarious responses— you’ve made my day, and now I’m off to France!

I wouldn't take white on a trip because of stains. In the Southern US, when it's still hot outside, as it is both before Memorial Day and after Labor Day, I will wear white clothes, including summer. When it feels like summer, it IS summer. I usually make Easter my pivot point for white in the spring.

I thought they threw you into jail. I guess they have gotten more lenient.

A true connoisseur may find jail the lesser punishment ! :-)

If anyone objects, tell them you're wearing "winter white". Yes, it's a thing.
Otherwise, opt for the imprisonment where you'll eat an actual baguette with actual butter.

A wine shop in my neighborhood just posted this to Facebook: “don’t worry, it’s ok to drink white wine after Labor Day! “
How appropos!

I wear whatever fits! Sometimes quite problematic.

Wear the white, no problem. Why would you care if it's a faux pas, if it were? No one else would.

Just returned from the south of France! Wearing white in the south of France in late September is absolutely no problem, even if you’re concerned about being fashionable. There was plenty of white around, much of it very stylish.
Thanks for all the responses, especially the amusing ones!
