Buses are really your only option between Chamonix and Aosta, since the cable cars do not operate on Mont Blanc past November 4, as well as the portion between Aiguille du Midi and Helbronner has been closed for repairs this summer. Try www.flixbus.com. Trains run from Aosta to Milan but trains from Chamonix would take much longer, via Martigny and Brig, Switzerland.

If you have a car it is a very scenic ride,we did it last May through the tunnel to visit the Roman Ruins of Aosta. The toll to go through the tunnel is pricy.

Buses run from Chamonix to Courmayeur every hour or so. From Courmayeur there are regular buses to Aosta where you can catch the train to Milan. I'v done this several times no need to take a taxi.

Thanks Brad.. was really sceptical about the flixbuses; as per some reviews they were always detailed so was planning to drop the chamonix stay altogether and stay at Annency and do a day trip to Chamonix ...but with your reply , I may still consider it.

Shama, we ended our last tour in Chamonix in October 2017 - it is definitely worth seeing as the scenery is magnificent. We took the Ouibus from Chamonix to Annecy to extend a few more days then went on to Geneva. Annecy is also worth seeing - very old and very beautiful. Check out the Ouibus. Our experience was excellent - the bus was on time, the driver extremely competent and there is a restroom on the bus. The most interesting thing about the bus ride (aside from the jaw dropping scenery) was that we were among a bunch of tired, bored locals going home from work instead of our usual group of extremely enthusiastic tour mates. Real life. Have a wonderful time whatever you choose!
