Visiting Normandy July, 2025: Tips for car, places to stay

We are planning on arriving in Paris in mid-July, 2025, and wanted to spend about a week in Normandy rather than range around France. We'd visited Paris several years ago and wanted to get out into the French countryside on this trip. We'd like to see the D-Day beaches and Mont St. Michel, of course.

  • What other sights in the region should we prioritize?

  • Is Caen, Bayeux, or some other town a good headquarters to take day trips from?

  • We are happy to take the train from Paris, but should we rent a car or can we get around via trains and cabs? If a car is preferable, where should we rent it?

Any other suggestions for first-time Normandy visitors are appreciated.

I'm not going to comment about your itinerary, since I don't know where your interests lie. A good guidebook may help. But for D Day beached, Bayeux is a good place to stay for the American landing sites, and you will want an overnight stay at MSM, or beside it on the mainland. A rental car will make your stay much easier since public transportation isn't geared for tourists in that area. Taking the train from Paris to Caen, and renting the car there is a good choice, since there are rental agencies close to the station.

I also would benefit from knowing where your interests lie. There are a lot of things to see in the area, but different people prefer different types of things.

Good suggestions above. There are a number of recent posts addressing your question on this website.

I don't know if this link will work:
https://search.ricksteves.com/?button=&date_range=1y&filter=Travel+Forum&query=normandy&utf8=✓

If it doesn't, enter "Normandy" or "Caen" or "Bayeux" or something similar in the query line. Then filter by Travel Forum and most recent year or years. Not the easiest of search engines, but probably worth your time to peruse recent posts if you haven't already.

martin.j.jophnson1,
Normandy is a large area. I highly recommend having a car. You have a week, so I would take a train to Rouen (getting there in the afternoon). Visit the cathedral, then walk under the clock and explore the medieval old town (charming, half-timbered buildings, Joan of Arc sites...). Spend the night and rent a car next morning to head to the coast. Take the D road along the Seine instead of the A road (autoroute). Follow the Route Des Abbayes and stop at the ruins of the Abbey of Jumiege. You can head for Honfleur or Entretat to spend the night and explore around there the next day. Stay another night and leave first thing in the morning for Bayeux. Stay there 3 nights (2 full days). One day see the tapestry, cathedral and museum, stroll around the town, find a cider-tasting drive. Next day spend the whole day seeing whatever WWII beaches and museums along them that interest you. Or take a full day tour with one of the companies that offer them (about $150.00 per person for a full day). After 3 nights in Bayeux, drive to MSM the next day. A neat town to stop along the way is Villedieu-la-Poelle and, if available, visit a lace-making or nmetal-working location/museum there. Stay the night at MSM. You can return the car at Rennes or Caen and take the train back to Paris later that day.
I think that is seven nights. What I want to emphasize is that Normandy is more than the DDay beaches. Don't miss all it has to offer!
Bonne chance et bon voyage!

We are going to Bayeau in April and staying again at B&B Villa Aggarthi. Located about two blocks from the tapestry museum and it is lovely. Suggest you book something now. The first time we took the train from Paris and there were taxis at the train we took to the place. The next day we used HQCompany for a full day tour of the DD sites..We were there three days and then train back to Paris. Next month we are driving there and using the same tour company with family this time. It was an excellent informative all day tour and is $150 per person best money we ever spent. They pick us up and drop off at Villa. Then we are taking day trip to MSM and St. Malo before leaving for eastern France. Highly suggest you watch the Longest Day movie which was also filmed a lot in the area. Good kuck.

We stayed in Honfleur at Hotel l’Ecrin which was charming and in Bayeux at Hotel Lion d’Or. Lion d’Or had a wonderful dining room. We had a rental car and both hotels provided parking.

We stayed for 5 days in Bayeux and found it to be a charming town. good restaurants, a nice open market, interesting cathedral, and of course the tapestry (but check to see if it is close for renovations). Peter D
