Visiting Angers

We'd like to do a day trip from Paris to Angers in mid-April. InOui direct trains from Paris to Angers are close to being sold out in mid-April weekends. For example, Saturday morning, April 18, there are almost no tickets available. I'm concerned this means Angers, especially the Chateau, will be overly crowded. There are slower trains, but that doesn't really work for a day trip. That weekend is best for us, although Monday might be made to work.

Any insight into why trains would be sold out a month in advance or suggestions on visiting?

While I can't speak to the train situation, I will say that we had a home exchange in a small town near Angers so we were in the city several times. It was never super busy any of our visits. When we did go to the Chateau, it too was fairly empty. This was in August. I would say that Angers isn't on the tourist track and most people are busy seeing the more "popular" chateaux of the Loire Valley.

We spent two nights here a few years ago and nothing was crowded including the Chateau. Even chateaux near Paris except for Versailles are not crowded and in April there is no way Anger will be crowded. It is not a tourist mecca. The Chateau is wonderful and the apocalypse tapestry is an actual series of tapestries and quite remarkable. You can eat in the courtyard on a nice day.

I visited Angers last summer when there was a festival. The streets were filled with vendors and they even had the race with waiters carrying a tray.

That said, nobody was there to see the Château and museums. It's a nice little city.

Hi, I live near Angers and I find this story about the TGV being full a month before a Saturday morning very surprising... Maybe wait a bit? Otherwise, no, the castle won't be crowded at all. There are probably also options via Tours or Laval, so TGV plus TER. Check the Laval-Angers connection for Saturday.

If you go to Angers, don't omit the "Apocalypse" tapestry. Fabulous. Best to read the "Book of revelation" beforehand.
