i will be spending two nites on the french coast, and currently have a reservation for villefranche sur mer. i want to stay on the coast, does anyone have suggestions as to location and lodging? tx, nick from santa cruz
What do you have reserved? A train arrival, a boat rental, or a room you're not sure about? I thought you were driving. Ricks' guidebooks for either France or Provence & Riviera make 4 suggestions for nice hotels in Villefranche-sur-Mer.
A few friends and I stayed at the Hotel Welcome, which is on the waterfront and within walking distance to the train stop. We enjoyed staying in Villefranch Sur Mer because it's quaint and much quieter than staying in Nice, yet easy to get to Nice and Monaco.
We recently stayed at the Hotel Flore. It wasn't close to the water but was close to the bus stop (Octroi) which we used to get to St. Jean Cap Ferrat and Monaco. The hotel has a nice pool and a view of the harbor and really friendly staff. Get one of the rooms with a porch and view. Absolutely lovely spot to sit and have a glass of wine after a day of tourng. There is also a Casino store close by to buy groceries (snacks, wine, premade sandwiches, fruit, drinks). The only downside is that it is more of a hike to the RS recommended restaurants in town. I would stay here again.
I don't know the specific hotels.
However all the liveliness is below the lowest corniche in the old town and close to the water.
Above there it is very quiet.
Just another note. The area is to a large part residential.
Even Nice rolls up the sidewalks. Unless you know where the clubs are.
Even Monaco is much cheaper for daily activities.
Villefrance's history is interesting. Take a tour from the Tourist Info Office.
