Villandry to Saint Emilion - suggestions along the route?

Hello! I will be traveling from Villandry to Saint Emilion by car on a Saturday in October. Any suggestions for stops along the way that shouldn't be missed? (Will be exploring Villandry and Tours the day before.)

The most direct route is bringing us through Chatellerault, Poitiers, Niort, Saintes, and Cognac. We have no schedule except to make it to Saint Emilion in the early evening for check-in. (approx 3 hour drive straight shot)

Many thanks for any suggestions!

If you haven't had enough of chateaux, you could start your day with a slight triangular detour to Chinon. The fortress is well restored, with video exhibits, motion-activated sound effects, many interpretive signboards, etc.

The FranceThisWay website may provide enough info on the towns you have listed so that you can decide what interests you. For example, here's the page for Cognac. https://www.francethisway.com/places/cognac.php
