Versailles trip from Paris for group

A group of 11 (6 adults and 5 kids ages 10-16) are planning to visit Versailles during our Paris visit. We are staying at Crowne plaza paris republique from March 28-30.
We want visit Versailles on March 30 (Friday). As we would like to go with the most economical choice. Looking for advice with:
* Should we go with tour companies or do the trip independently? Price difference?

If we do it independently, need help with:
* What's the best option for transportation from my hotel to Versailles?
* Which entry tickets to buy to get the best experience of the 1-day visit to Versailles?

Read online that kids under 18 are admitted free to the Palace. Does it mean we need to buy tickets for the kids only to visit Private apartments of the king

Based on a previous post:

Travel to Paris on 27th night and stay in Paris for 2-3 nights.

You've apparently changed plan a little but not much.

If you are only staying 2 nights in Paris, you will not see Paris at all if you take your only full day to do Versailles. If you aren't coming in until late on the 28th, I wouldn't do this even if you are staying 3 nights. Just sayin'. Are you only coming to Paris to do the Chateau? Have you been to Paris before? Are you trying to see the city itself in only 1 day?

The most economical thing would be to skip Versailles. With only two days you could spend your time more economically as well.

I agree with the others, that if you only have 2 days in Paris, I would skip Versailles.
