Versailles Royal Opera

I am interested in tips for attending a performance at Versailles Opera. There will be a midday performance of Beethoven next March. Would someone be able to explain the ticket categories? What attire would be appropriate? I am hoping to spend a good Sunday at Versailles touring and relaxing with Beethoven. Thank you.

Music at Versailles is one of my favorite things to do in Paris. Ticket categories: Amphithéâtre is the best, on the same level as the stage. This is where the nobles sat, right in front of the King’s Loge. Parterre looks like it would be best, but it’s lower than the stage so second best IMHO. In the galeries, front rows in section 1-4 have decent views.

For the matinée performance, men usually wear sport coat, no tie. Women smart slacks and top, business flats if you’re not used to navigating the cobblestones. Be prepared for a security check, special line just for the performances.

The evening performances are also special, as Versailles is closed to the public, the garden and fountain is lit so you can sip your champagne, look out the windows and imagine Versailles in its splendor.

Have a great day at the Palace!

Royals didn't just sit in the theatre; some of them were up on stage performing. King Louis Fourteen was a singer and proud of his shapely dancing legs. You can bet he wasn't in the chorus.

The Opera House was built during the reign of Louis XV, so Louis XIV would not have been on stage. Just a bit of trivia if you ever get on Jeopardy.
