We will be going to Versailles Palace on a Sunday in September. Our only other choice would be a Saturday, but we plan to go to Chateau Fontainebleau that day.
Our plan is to get there early just before it opens, enter the Palace at 9:00 a.m. with timed entry tickets, mobile or printed. Visit the main palace first followed by Hall of Mirrors and then out to the one hour Gardens Musical Water Show (11-12 p.m.) We would then visit Marie Antoinette Estate and Le Petite Trianon after they open at 12:00 p.m. Then back into the palace if necessary. We hope to leave Versailles mid-afternoon for Paris so that we can visit a neighborhood or two from late afternoon through the evening.
Is this a good plan? Comments or suggestions please!
We are going to Paris in September/October as well, and to Versailles on a Wednesday or Thursday. My plan of attack is to do what some others have suggested....and that is to reverse the order of your visit to mitigate crowds. So, go mid-morning, do the gardens first, see the Water Show from 11 -12, followed by the Marie Antoinette and Petite Trianon at noon, and do the chateau last. You can still catch a mid-late afternoon train and get back to Paris for more exploring. It would just depend how much time you want to spend in each of the three areas of Versailles.
