The Town of Versailles overnight

That overnight stay at the Palace of Versailles looks intriguing but way more than I'd ever spend. But it has me wondering about ways to beat the crowds. Has anyone stayed in the town of Versailles in order to stay at the Palace later in the day and also get there first thing in the morning? Other things to do and see while there?

I have looked at the website also and thought about it. My thoughts didn’t last too long. Friends of ours stayed at the giraffe hotel in Africa, about the same cost. They said it was an amazing Experience.

Maybe I didn't make the question clear enough, I'm not asking about the overnight stat at the Palace, but in the town of Versailles.

Thanks for the clarification, Allan. I misunderstood.

The RER between Paris and Versailles runs from around 5 am to midnight (ish). If getting there early and staying late is the only reason for staying in the town, then it really isn't a reason- you can do that from Paris. Now, if Versailles was at the beginning or end of your Paris stay, and was enroute to or from somewhere else, it might make some kind of logistical sense.

Sorry Allan. I read the question but didn’t READ it. Good thing this wasn’t a test.

I could have done a, better job with the question. I think I want more than one day at the Palace so figured it may be more convenient to stay nearby. Just trying to find out if anyone else has done this and what else there may be to do in Versailles.

Several years ago I spent the weekend at an Ibis a five minute walk from the palace. Versailles is a quiet suburb once the buses have left. There was a small weekend market and a few small restaurants but not much else happening.
I was able to pick up my ticket when the box office opened but now that there are pre-booked timed entry, I doubt there is an advantage .But if you want a break from big city hustle and bustle and “ live like a local” there are a lot worse places to be.
