If we can't get there at 8am, would it be better to go mid-afternoon and do the gardens and then do Palace 1.5 hours before it closes? How will the security and interior crowds be at that time of day?
We were there about that same time this past year. We took a bike tour, so we rode bikes in the gardens, out to Marie Antoinette's farm and other sites before going into the palace. The crowds in the morning looked horrendous. We went into the palace about 3:30 I think and while it was still crowded we could at least progress through without too much delay and see what we wanted to see. I don't recall much delay at security at all; probably a line, but it kept moving.
July 13 is a Wednesday, and I've been told that it is the best day of the week to visit Versailles, as well as visit the palace late in the day. So, I think you are right on target. Have a great trip.
My wife and I were there a few years ago and I agree with the other 2 posts . We spent the day walking the grounds , then went back around 3-3:30 and walked into the palace . It was busy but not crowded that we couldn't enjoy it. We did the fountainbleau chateau this past sept . and enjoyed that also and no crowds .
