Hi, we have two options for visiting Versailles. Both Wednesdays.
Either 11:30am - end of June (straight from CDG); or 9am July 10.
I'll splurge for a timed ticket, but want the fewest crowds. I'm worried noon will be too late in the day and we'll hit massive crowds in June... but then again schools out could mean bigger crowds mid July. Anyone have experience or advice? Merci!
Assuming you are staying nearby or you can get there early enough, I'd go for 9am. Aside from crowd issues it will be cooler then. It can be a hot, humid locale.
We were there in May with a timed entrance of 4:30 and it was still a cattle call. I don't mean to be so negative but I would plan on huge (and often pushy, rude crowds) regardless of the time of entry. The weather may be the one variable you can improve on by entering earlier in the day.
It’s been a while since I last visited. I wasn’t aware you could buy timed tickets.
I would go for the earlier time. The dates make little difference. It will either be super, super crowded or extremely crowded. The crowd really only effects the palace tour and there is little that you can do about it other than to shuffle along. Once out side the crowd pretty well spreads over the grounds.
Personally, the gardens are much preferred to the palace on a super crowded day. Be sure to rent a bicycle or a rowboat while you’re there. Have lunch in the little cafe tucked away in the garden on the left hand side as you walk from the palace towards the lake.
Thank you all so much for your advice - it is really appreciated! Sounds like 9am July is best. We'll try not to get stressed with the crowds and spend the bulk of our time in the gardens.
Go for July 10, and be in line by 8 am. It would be a shame to rush from the airport and see Versailles when jet lagged. Have a great visit!
Quick follow up - we'll have a car at this time. Parking at Versailles? Right in the front lot, street park, suggested lots??
We're so excited (:
