Does anyone know of a private tour guide or company giving tours of the important sights of Verdun? Staying in Paris and could take train to Verdun to meet a guide. Have searched the internet and have not found anything that fits our group of five. Thank you.
Have you contacted the Office de Toursime in Verdun and asked about tours. These people will know what is available.
You can inquire in English:
I can't recommend a tour guide. I was part of a group that did a military staff walk across the battlefield for a week last April, but that's not the same. I will suggest that the books of Maarten Otte are the best guides I've seen, with excellent maps for doing your own exploration. You can easily follow one of the routes they list. I've been using them for the past year and they are very accurate.
Do not miss the Verdun Museum (Mémorial de Verdun), it's excellent. I also recommend a visit to Montfaucon-d'Argonne, Varennes-en-Argonne, Butte de Vauquois, and the Meuse-Argonne American Cemetery and Memorial.
