Verdun to Argonne cemetery

Any recommendations how to transport from Verdun to the Muesee d Argonne cemetery 17 km northwest?

If you're going by public transport, I would suggest getting the exact information in the Verdun Tourist Office. The cemetery is located in Varennes / Lorraine , another singular historical site if you're into French history. I would assume a bus at the train station goes out to Varennes ,

In 1791 Louis XVI went along with his wife's ill-fated plan to escape from Paris to link up with the Austrians in Belgium. Until then the fury of the populace had not been directed at him, personally. They and their party got as far Varennes in Lorraine where the king was recognised.

Thanks for this tip on the museum and cemetery ...still doable as a day trip from Paris Est.

I’ve tromped around battlefields in the Meuse Argonne and have been to the American Cemetery there. In French it’s called Cimetière Américain de Meuse-Argonne. It is a VERY rural destination. Tour buses show up, private tours come through and random visitors. There is not public transportation from Verdun to the cemetery..

A rental car and GPS will allow you vast freedom of movement among many monuments and American sites in that area. When originally built the cemetery was so remote that it had on site accommodation for visitors. A century on, access to the Cemetery has not improved.

Varennes has a large monument to soldiers from Pennsylvania that is of passing interest. The battlefield where Alvin York earned his Medal of Honor is relatively near if you have a car.

This is a worthwhile trip but it takes some extra effort and really doesn’t lend itself to a casual “drive-by” visit. I’ve been to a field a number of miles from the Cemetery where my grandfather was in a heated battle with the Germans in October 1918, so it’s familiar and meaningful territory for me.

We had a rental car in that area and am glad we did. The sites at Verdun are spread out. For example, from the memorial/museum to the ossuary is a little over a mile, and Fort Douaumont is another mile. If you want to see the Herméville Canon, it’s in the middle of nowhere and 12 miles from the memorial.
