Vimy is much too far from Verdun, it's in the region of Nord Pas-de-Calais. The Aisne is also too far, some 40 miles north of the Marne.

I stay in Metz, a bit far too but it's still in Lorraine as in Verdun. You can stay in Verdun itself. Depending on which departure you take, you get to Verdun by train or bus.

I have done it both ways, both have their advantages. By bus you see the backroads from Metz to Verdun which were battlefield areas too and military markers for both the Germans and the French. The bus also stops in Gravelotte, the French version of Gettysburg of 1870, the bloodiest engagement on the both sides.

We too stayed in Metz prior to visiting Verdun. After Verdun we continued on to Dinant, Belgium and stayed there. We had a rental car.

It makes a big difference if you have a car. If not you're consigned to the major cities, and Metz is the closest. Verdun is okay; I've never stayed there, but I like the smaller towns. Places like Varennes or Etain.

I’ve stayed a couple times in Verdun and it’s not a great place to stay. Low end budget hotel chains and a few worn properties downtown. Wouldn’t recommend anything there.

Here are some places I've used in the past year while wandering the Meuse/Argonne battlefields. None of these are Hilton/Marriott type lodging, but they are very local, very back door, and quite reasonable. You will want a car to reach them.

Hôtel L'Argonn' Auberge - very small town of Apremont (Grand Est). good food. decent rooms. interesting antique shop just down the road.

Hotel/Restaurant du Lac de Madine - Heudicort. good rooms, but only in the main building, not the annex down the road. Very good food. interesting small town with local cemetery and in the evenings a good food truck.

Hotel Les Tulips - Vienne le Chateau. Small town, interesting church. nice rooms, good breakfast. Very popular with car clubs and rally fans.

Keep in mind the train schedules regarding Verdun and Metz.

Staying Metz, should you choose this, means you have only the afternoon to pursue your activities in Verdun. To save the time you might want to consider staying in Verdun if you're dependent on public transport as I am .
