Try using rome2rio.com. Enter the starting point and destination. From Melun, you can take the RER train to Fontainebleau and then a taxi to the chateau. For Mont St. Michel, looks like a 4-5 hour train ride each way from Paris.

You just get back on the train at Melun and go another stop or two and take the bus to the chateau. IMHO it is a bit too much for a day. You can easily spend a full day at Vaux le Vicomte. Here is our visit:

I am of the one chateau in a day school of travel; the experiences tend to be similar so I'd rather linger and really explore one than rush to do two. YMMV.

From Apr 1 - Nov 2 , Vaux le Vicomte now has daily shuttle buses running from the Verneuil l’Etang train station to the chateau at a cost of 10 euro roundtrip. To get to this station, take the direct TER train (Line P) in the direction of Provins.

More info here http://www.vaux-le-vicomte.com/en/useful-information/the-useful-informations/access/

If you decide to go to Fontainebleau on the same day, then it's best to take either the Line R from Gare de Lyon or the RER D to Melun, taxi to Vaux le Vicomte, taxi back to the Melun station, and then continue on the Line R to the Fontainebleau-Avon station. From there you can catch bus #1 for the 15 minute ride to the chateau. To to back to Paris, take the Line R. It's a 45 minute ride and you get off at Gare de Lyon. No need to prebook any of these tickets - just buy them at the station on the day you go. If you have a navigo card, these trips are covered (with the exception of the shuttle to the chateau)

This is a really good site to look up travel options and schedules: http://vianavigo.com/en/routes-district-maps/

Dawn, this is super useful information. I would not have thought to go to that station instead of Melun.

I don't want to throw a damper on your spirit of adventure, but I took a day tour from Paris and it was awesome. First thing in the morning I boarded a coach on Rue de Rivoli which took us to Vaux-le-Vicomte, then to Fountainbleau, then back to Paris by 18:00 or so. It was 59 Euro with all admissions included. After three weeks and six countries of trying to find my way around solo, I was so happy to just be able to board a bus and have it all taken care of.

Hello Melissa,
I must agree with Frank. I'm travelling solo to Paris a few days prior to joining a RS "My Way" Tour in June and have booked the tour Frank recommended through ParisVision.com. After much research, I concluded that this was the easiest and most efficient way to see both on the same day. Plan to pack a lunch for the bus between the two chateau.

I agree. Did the same tour. It was great. I've used Paris Vision before. Always a good experience.
