Vannes/Auray area, help in the rain

This Friday my family and I will be in Auray and it is forcasted to rain a lot. Does anyone have any ideas of some interesting indoor activities? My kids are 11 and 7. Don't worry about what our interests are.

Thanks, Matt

You can see Carnac anytime. There are also some Dolmans in the area that the kids might find interesting, some are collapsed but others are intact.

My favorite was Cairns du Gavrinis. Everything is in French but it's an incredible passage tomb similar to Newgrange in Ireland, but only discovered fairly recently. You reach it by ferry from Larmor-Baden. The ferry/guided tour are on one ticket. They also show you some partially submerged hinges and, depending on the time of day, you can see some incredible tidal flows around the islands in the bay.

Vannes has a big medieval center and ramparts on part of the city. I spent a couple days there but didn't really focus on the things kids might enjoy.

We found the standing stones and burial carins of Carnac fascinating even in the rain. There were all kinds of thing to interest kids from climbing the vista tower (2 stories), lots of sheep, to going inside a burial chamber from 3000 BC. After the morning there we drove to the beach at Quiberon. It was beautiful with a light rain and storm on the horizon. If interested PM me and I can send photos

Why not buy light ponchos and just go out? The rain rarely lasts all day and it would be a shame if you came all this way to not see what you wanted to.

Rain is par for the course in Bretagne, and Vannes on the south coast is the sunny, dry area. Chexbres has a good idea to buy ponchos and maybe even some rubber boots you can bring back as souvenirs.

The rain was lighter than predicted (the forecast was for 12 mm of rain and we got 3 mm) and we were able to execute our planned itinerary of prehistory sites including Gavrinis Carnac, and Lamariaquer.

I agree that my children don't melt but there's a point where standing in the pouring rain to look at stones makes the entire family cranky and one should be flexible. We lucked out.

You may also drive to Lorient and visit the submarine base (from WWII) and the sailing museum Eric Tabarly (including activities for children).
