I will be travelling to France in July and have been wanting to dine at the beautiful Pic in Valence. We have been wondering whether to stay in Valence or would we get more out of our trip if we stayed in Lyon and just visited Valence for a day or 2. We want to see lavender fields also.

Either would be fine, but Lyon is much, much larger and has far more to see and do (Valence Métropole = 224K whereas Lyon Métropole = 1,424K). But Valence would be interesting as well. How many days total do you plan to be in the area?
If it were me, I would probably stay in Lyon and make Valence and points south an outing for a few days.

We are planning to be in the area about 8-10 days. Ivwouls love to see lavender fields if possible.

Helas! Often the lavender fields are done blooming after June. Earely July will be more probable than later July. Of course, the summer weather will determine a lot. Best of luck!
