I have a "free" apt in Val for the middle of Sept. I know most places closed but I am really only interested in hiking as I can cook out home. Anyone been to that area at that time of the year? Wondering if the weather is still good for hiking?
You never know what weather will be like, but mid-September should still be good for hiking - no snow yet, usually.
Be aware that Val d'Isère is basically in the middle of one of the world's largest ski resorts, so it can look a bit barren without snow, and the lifts are all over the landscape. There are still some good hikes, but they tend to be steep, and a car is essential to reach most trailheads.
The availability of free accommodation outweighs the drawbacks, in my opinion ;-)
