I’ve used the RATP app on previous trips for finding buses and schedules while in Paris. I’m no tech wiz, though — how do I download/save certain routes now/in advance of my trip? I have an iPhone, if that matters.

The easy way is to download the Citymapper and use it for public transportation information.
You can download any of the bus routes individually or a métro map a www.ratp.fr

I used the RATP app as much as possible in the hotel when I had wifi. Sometimes I took screen shots of the app so I had the info as a photo and didn't need data. I also bought an Orange Holiday SIM Card to use. That worked great.
I also just used paper to note the starting point, Metro or bus #, which direction and where to get off.
Loved the RATP app!
