Hi, we want to not drive from Amboise to Arles in a single day but make an overnight stop roughly half way between the two. Any suggestions for a pretty town to stop and visit? we were thinking of Beaune but it seems very expensive for nice accommodations? Thanks
What about Sarlat-La-Canéda? It’s about midway and is a very charming town.
I agree Sarlat is a delightful medieval city. My husband and I spent a week there last year. Be sure to stay within the city walls for the true experience. There are multiple parking areas around the medieval walls. We parked for free everyday. It was a 5 minute walk from where we stayed.
So if you take the shortest route it is 6.5 hours and there's no obvious overnight destinations near the midpoint. If you divert to beaune or Sarlat your would be turning 6.5 hours of driving into 9.5 hours at least. When you factor in the logistics of checking in and out of a hotel, the check in times, etc, you will be paying a hefty price in terms of time and energy to make a one night stop work. If it were me, I would do the drive in one day with convenient stops for recharging en route. French highway rest stops are great. Great food, lots of activities and a cultural experience of their own.
Wish I had seen this from Matt before I reserved hotle in beaune!
