Two tickets to Paris-dise!

It's finally almost here -- my long-planned and eagerly-awaited return trip to Paris! My wife has suffered me in married format for 12 years now, and the woman deserves a break. Despite that, she still wants me to go with her. So thanks to the cheap fares on IcelandAir, the City of Lights is once again at my beck-and-call.

  1. Ok, I'm on to your little tricks, IcelandAir. THIS time I'm bringing extra water, extra food, extra movies, extra music, extra edibles (to be consumed BEFORE getting on the plane) and a mountain of Xanax. Can't sleep on the plane? Not this time! They'll have to crowbar my ample butt outta that seat once we reach KEF.

  2. I arrive at CDG the day after the run-off (May 8); hopefully, the city won't be in flames following a Le Penn win. Also, I have to run around Terminal 1 buying SIM cards and museum passes before I even pay a month's salary to a licensed bandit in a taxi due to it being a bank holiday.

  3. Hotel Boquet: that's right, I'm pitching camp in the 7th, right off Rue du Rick Steves'. I know Rue Cler is about Gallic as a French Tickler, but I liked it last time and damnit, I -AM- a tourist! I have no shame in admitting this. You could paint a chimp blue, white and red and it'd be 100% more French than I will ever be. Plus, I'll betcha ten bucks it'd vote for Le Penn!

  4. Schedule? What's that? Oh yeah, the idea that at certain times I'll be certain places. Tee heee heee! You're so cute! We don't need no steenking schedules! Here's my honest-to-god schedule:

Monday - Friday: Whatever the Hell I please, involving wine and cheese in the sunny afternoon at a quaint cafe', until such time as I'm perfectly content to sod off somewhere else, preferably somewhere else with more wine and cheese and enjoy the sunset. Maybe some nice dinner and a little after-dinner drink. Rinse. Lather. Repeat. I may go to a museum or I may just sit in a park. I have nine days in Paris and I refuse to make a sprint out of it.

Saturday: Off to Lyon and yummy, yummy French cuisine.

Sunday: Mass at Notre Dame. Call this "Religious Tourism". As an atheist, I'm fascinated by the beauty of religion. I love churches, shrines, mosques, temples and other holy places. I love the sounds and smells of these places, the sights, and most of all the rituals. I've never been to a Catholic Mass (with Gregorian chant, no less!), so I figure this is my big opportunity.

Monday: Reims, anyone?

Tuesday: Walk around Paris and enjoy my last day, preferably with wine and cheese, crepes, baguettes and all the other joys that make life in Paris so wonderful.

Weds: Depart for Ghent and my much-anticipated Rick Steves' tour of Belgium et al.

So there we go: not the most structured of trips, but who said Paris was structured?

"I love the sounds and smells of these places,"

Indeed, for me personally, the best things about growing up in a Catholic home were the incense at church and being a good speller. I left religion behind long ago but love to visit churches, and they burn a lot of incense at Notre Dame!

Sounds completely awesome! So I'll "....pack my bags and leave tonight!"

Ahh Reims - I spent 4 days once in "Champagne" visiting Reims, Hautvillers, and Epernay. I remember the Marc Chagall windows at the Cathedral/Reims, and toured many tasting rooms. We discovered that there were some small producers whose Champagne tasted just as good as the Big 5.

Indeed, Mike, we're gonna have to show you to some of the Irish or Scottish pubs, would hate to see you go without your pints for such a long time!!

Luckily you don't have to take out a month's salary for the taxi since the authorities fixed the rates for airport runs last year. It will be 55 euros for you and your wife to get to the Left Bank from CDG (as long as you don't answer the whispered -- make that yelled -- entreaties in the terminal of those approaching you with the magic words Taxi? Taxi?)

p.s. for visit to Reims, the Surrender Museum (WWII) is cool (and small, easily visited) . . .do check out reserving Champagne producer tours in advance, especially if you have a particular one you're interested in.

I'll arrive in Paris ten days after on 18 May.

Sounds perfectly perfect!

Alas - we won't arrive Paris until 3 months later. :( Please save some wine & cheese for us! Our schedule sounds much like yours - a lot of nothing in between nothing!!

We have 3 nights in Epernay to seek out champagne - can't wait!

Enjoy!

Love it! I'm six months behind you on our London, Paris, Amsterdam jaunt and am planning the same type of schedule. Don't get me wrong, I will have researched to the nth degree places we might want to see and things we might want to do so that options are there, but I plan to do a lot of wandering and looking too. Paris Adèle on fb gives lots of ideas for great walks with specialty things to see or experience.

Have fun in France and have a blast on your tour! I can't wait to hear about it.

Howdy Kids,

Y'know, I had a lot trouble finding delicious, nutritious pints when I last visited the fine city of Paris. I did see a lot of Budweiser being fobbed off as "imports" (which I guess it is if you're in Europe), but I didn't fly 7,000 miles to drink beer that's been passed through a horse. So instead, I'm substituting my beloved beer with Cotes du Rhone and a wee nibble of fromage ('wee nibble' -- ha! I'm going Godzilla on the first cheese plate that appears before me, but I promise not to moyle the brie). Also, thanks to Canlis here in Seattle, I've acquired a taste for foie gras. This means that between lovely smearings of goose liver, coq-au-vin and grilled rotisserie chicken, it will NOT be safe for fowl of any stripe to be in an uncooked state. And I'm not stopping there! I plan to eat my way around a See-and-Say. I'm going to bring a See-and-Say into every restaurant I encounter and pull the string. Whatever animal makes the sound that comes up I will expect to be brought to me swimming in either a creme or red wine sauce. I'm sure this will be the next big idea in haute cuisine, so I'm just getting ahead of the curve!

Finally, I'm gonna travel light this time: the Rick Steves' Way! I've got 5 pair of underwear stuffed in my jacket pocket, 4 pairs of socks shoved down the front of my pants, and a pair of REI Adventure Pants ('Have an adventure -- IN YOUR PANTS!') rolled up and wrapped around my neck like a travel pillow. I figure that anything else I need I can buy at the thrift shops that line the Champs-Elysees. I'm also going to slap panty liners under my armpits so I can wear my shirts for more than one day, in the soles of my shoes so I can get extra mileage out of my socks, and across my forehead in case I get sweaty. Beat THAT, Mr. "22 lbs MAX" Steves!

(nb: none of these ideas have been approved by my wife yet, but I figure after a couple of glasses of wine, they should be an easy sell! I might even give HER some of the wine, too!)

I hope you allowed your wife to pack a few outfits and that you do your own handwashing.

We love the 7th and the Hotel Bosquet. Great location and staff.

Luckily Macron won so you can celebrate with the rest of Europe!
