Two nights between Paris and Antibes.....?

I will be traveling in mid September leaving Paris by train to?? and then my final destination also by train to the Antibes. I have 2 nights that I would like to stay somewhere between the beginning and end of our journey. We are two middle age women who are traveling without our spouses. A small town, perhaps a vineyard (shouldn't be hard to find), history, food, shopping. We don't want the large touristy atmosphere. When we arrive in the Antibes we only have 4 nights and may rent a car to discover the region. All advice is greatly appreciated.

As always,

Regards,

Lorie

I can only recommend that you spend most of your time in the south of France where you are going to Antibes. We located in Eze for a month and took the train and buses all along the coast different trips everyday, where the scenery is magnificent and with abundance of cultural entertainment and places of interest. Nice, Cap Farrat, Ville France, Eze Sur Mer (which has a delightful village with buses leaving from the train station is beyond beautiful with amazing views).and many more villages along the coast as far as Monaco. We chose not to rent a car as the buses and trains are so efficient low prices and take the stress out of driving and parking.
A wonderful part of the world! Enjoy

I'd add the 2 nights to the Riviera.

Antibes is a good base to visit Ville-Franche, Nice, Menton, Cannes, Monaco and more by train. You can get to other lovely villages by bus. I think a car would be a nightmare in mid-September, which is still high season. I was on the Riviera a month ago. I spent 2 nights in Marseille, 5N in Nice and 3N in St-Paul-de-Vence (with a car). I loved Marseille, Nice was a good base and I did day trips by train, then picked up the car to explore the scenery and villages north of the coast (I liked the coast better). I didn't have trouble finding parking (remember, March is very off-season) but it was a bit scarce. In September, there's going to be a lot more traffic.

Ville-Franche was my very favorite and wasn't nearly as touristy as any of the other places I visited. One of the things I found odd about Antibes was that there were no restaurants or cafes along the coast, except one with a very pricey menu.
