Bonjour. On one leg of our trip this October, we planned to stay in Beaune for two nights on our way from Carcassonne to Eguisheim. Obviously, there is a bounty of options on this 8-9-hour drive. Before we lock down this plan, would anyone have alternative recommendations for a good close-to-midway stop for two nights?
We prefer smaller-than-Lyon-sized towns for over-nights. And we wouldn't be opposed to two separate stops (one night each) between Carcassonne and Eguisheim.
[We will be driving]
Thanks for all your guidance!
There's nothing at all wrong with Beaune for two nights, but also think about Dijon, another charming place - either for two nights or split your stay into one night each.
Thank you, Lin!
We had also considered staying a night in Orange, then Beaune before heading to Eguisheim. But now Dijon is looking quite enjoyable. It is larger than any of our other stops, but the old town looks so charming and easy to navigate (owl walk).
2 nights in Beaune is what I would recommend.
I’d break it up differently, closer to the middle: Carcassonne to Vienne and then Vienne to Colmar.
Vienne, just south of Lyon in the Côtes du Rhone wine region, is a fascinating Roman town with many ruins and an extensive museum across the river. It’s one of my favorite places in France.
Or:
Two stops: Carcassonne to Vaison -La-Romaine for night #1 and then Vaison to Beaune for night #2.
Remember that whatever driving times are given don’t include stops, traffic jams, getting lost.
