Two-night Provence base in May: Arles or Avignon?

Hi, prior to a week’s walk in the Luberon, we have several days (two nights), and have never been to Provence. We are using public transport. Would you recommend basing in Arles or Avignon? (Have Rick’s France guidebook for sleeping suggestions.)

Other suggestions for this brief visit appreciated as well!

Also, any tips on public transport to Roussillon (start of walk)?

Thank you!!

We haven't been there yet (trip coming up soon), but I can tell you after lots of reading and forum research that we decided to stay in Arles, instead of Avignon. It sounded more our speed, and Rick rates it well in his book. Avignon seems to be a good base for connections and tours, but there are also good bus routes we've found that will help us get to where we want to explore, leaving from Arles. We will also be depending on public transportation as we explore Provence and the Riviera.

Hope this helps!

Can you tell more about your week's walk in the Luberon? I'm curious. :-)

Hi Laurie, thanks for the feedback; we like to build our trips around long walks (we actually ran into Rick S in Switzerland right after we did the TMB a few years ago). On this trip, we are walking the Hill Towns of the Luberon - not quite a point-to-point walk, but we have stays in three villages over the 6 nights. We booked this through Inntravel - our first time through them. We are spending a few days along the Riviera too, prior to Provence.

I would choose charming Arles over the more urban Avignon.
