Two Country Trip (France and Italy)

Hi,
My family and I are planning our first trip to Europe next Summer (Aug 2018). We're planning to do 2 countries (France and Italy). We'll have about 3 weeks with a flight into CDG in France and flying home from Rome. We want to utilize the train as much as possible, avoiding any flights. We are planning to take a train from Paris to Venice then Venice to Florence and finally Florence to Rome. Any tips on train do's and don'ts/what type of pass to purchase? Train overnight accommodations? I have a family of 4 with 2 children (son will be 9 and daughter will be 14 by the trip).
Thanks in advance, the planning is fun but at times daunting and overwhelming.

Regards,
Leeza

Awesome! Thank you!

How far in advance should I book these?

Also is it feasible to do day trips from Florence to say, Cinque Terre or is it a big hassle?
Suggest driving or train?

Usually 120 days in advance
you can train to Cinque Terre from Florence pretty easily.

Driving there I think is a hassle.
I would book the train Fiorence to Monterosso and then work my way south to Riomaggiore using the Cinque Terre express
Or some people hike from town to town depending if the routes are open.
Each town is just 5 to 10 min ride taking the Cinque Terre express

And then to go back you book
Riomaggiore to Florence
There is usually a change of trains in La Spezia coming and going to Cinque Terre from Florence

For information on Paris to Venice by train see here: https://www.seat61.com/international-trains/trains-from-Paris.htm#Paris-Italy (scroll down for the "Thello" overnight train).
For train travel in Italy in general see here: https://www.seat61.com/Italy-trains.htm

Do not buy a pass. It will be a lot cheaper to buy cheap advance-purchase tickets when the become available about 120 days before departure. See aforementioned website for details.

I would suggest spending at least one night in the Cinque Terre. By the time you take the train to Monterosso walk the trails and then head back to Florence it will be a rushed day. It is a unique area and to explore each town takes some time.

Thank you both for the great tips on the train/berth and also the Cinque Terre overnight option.

Just a few thoughts:
I think you are much better off flying from Paris to Venice than taking a train, it may be cheaper and will be much faster.
I flew that same flight on Vueling and think the flights were 40 euro per person one way ; definitely much less than an overnight sleeper train and that 90 minute flight is probably an 11 hour train ride! That is a huge time difference.

For the rest of your journeys the train makes the most sense.
Book the trains as early as possible is usually the best price just be careful as the best prices are usually not changeable/refundable.
Flights are usually best priced closer to your timeframe, predicting exactly when is impossible but if I had to guess I would say 90-120 days before makes sense.

August is not an ideal time for this trip but I assume your only option with the kids and your schedules for it to happen. Everywhere will be hot, not every place has AC, often encounter public transit areas without AC or hallways of steps without AC, it is just limiting on how much you can do in the heat. Not to mention the extra tourists at this time and in some cases either extra locals vacationing or the opposite with all of the locals gone and nothing but tourists like you in the touristy cities.

You are taking a very city and walking extensive trip. I would anticipate your children may have trouble or get frustrated by that. I personally like to break up any long trip to a mix of city and more of a nature area or less populated area where the place I am staying may a pool or similar for a little relaxation time.
With a 4 city tour of Paris, Venice, Florence and Rome (4 great destinations) you really don't have much time for additional locations but could do a couple of day trips ; expect to be walking many miles each day just to hit the highlights.

Cinque Terre I don't think works well as a daytrip, would be better as an overnight or there may be better options instead to do as a daytrip. Cinque Terre will be very crowded in August.

Of your 4 places I would recommending taking more care and being willing to spend more to stay where you want most in Paris and Rome. They are far larger so the location of lodging matters more, in my opinion. Venice and Florence are smaller and doesn't matter as much ; Florence is tiny so really doesn't matter ; Venice you can use means of transportation other than your feet to get around from so many places but do stay on the island for the best time.

Wow thanks so much MReynolds! I definitely have a lot to consider. We're spending a good chunk of time in Paris and surrounding area for the first 5-6 days of our trip. We're meeting my sister and her family the following week (when they fly in). We're still mapping out the cities in Italy to maximize our time there but not take so much on that we take away the fun and add frustration.

We're thinking of renting accommodations via AirBnB or Home Away to accommodate our 8 people vs hotels in Italy.

I found some great places at reasonable places (it sounds like it'll might be a good to definitely have A/C and possibly a pool for the kids to enjoy).

We have some hotel points so we could possibly take advantage of that during the trip.
But any additional suggestions/tips welcome!
