Am in the preliminary planning stage for a trip to France in September '27, which at the moment includes about 10 - 12 days in western Brittany. After perusing a number of guidebooks I've tenatively settled on Ploumanach/ Perros-Guirec as a base for exploring the northern part of the peninsula but am conflicted regarding a possible base for the southern half. About us: we're slow travelers and prefer smaller villages over larger cities and towns, with lots of meandering around the local backroads and countryside just soaking everything in. We'll have a car obviously.
With that said I've been looking at Locronan as a potential base for 5 or 6 nights but am open to other suggestions from anyone familiar with this part of Brittany. TIA

Hello. Locronan is small, and the village won't be very lively in late September. That said, it makes a decent base for visiting Quimper, the Crozon Peninsula, Douarnenez, and the Pointe du Raz. It really depends on what you want to see. It is a bit out of the way for southern Finistère. There are other options—such as Douarnenez or Tréboul, Audierne, Pont-l'Abbé, or Concarneau—which are lively year-round, unlike Locronan. However, Quimper remains the best base for this part of Brittany.

I really would not suggest Locronan as a base for this long: it is a small village with few places to eat, and it takes 30 minutes to walk around the whole village. If Quimper is too large for you, consider Concarneau maybe?

Robert...not often mentioned, but I really like Quimper. Also, but not for more than a day or two, Le Conquet. And Auray is charming. Not a long drive to Carnac either.

Quimper does look like the better option as a central base from which to explore the surrounding area, and the central part of the old city itself does look pretty nice.
Will run the options past the boss and see what she decides.

I stayed in Le Conquet for 5 nights last summer. If the weather is nice there’s plenty to do if you enjoy coastal walks and beaches. That said, Quimper is probably the best option. Auray is nice but we saw everything we wanted to see in 2 days around there.
