Two bases in Menton over three weeks, late Feb/early March 2023

In the early planning stages for a 3 week stay in Menton. I realize the weather may not be the greatest but due to work limitations this is the the only time we are able to go. That, plus the Fete du Citron in Menton Feb 12 to 26 2023.

Last time in the Cote d'Azur was April 2017. That trip was 8 days based in Antibes with a car, plus train (Vence, St Paul de Vence, Le Bar sur Loup, Tourettes-Sur-Loup, Grasse, Verdon Gorge, Nice, Cannes, Monaco). We enjoyed a pick-pocket near miss at the Nice train station on that one!

No car this time around but we'll take day trips out to surrounding areas by train as the mood strikes us, both east (Italy) and west. Specifics TBD.

I noticed this morning on the Air BNB site, they provide suggested Apartments in two different areas of Menton to split our 3 weeks, and that seemed like a decent idea. One of them is within the old town area, and the other is closer to the water with a great view of the Baie du Soleil. I'm thinking this is a good idea to avoid the boredom and funk that might come with staying in the same apartment and seeing the same neighborhood for the full 3 weeks.

Looking for opinions and experiences with those that have split their time between two places during one longer stay in the same place.

Thanks,
Peter

I would see the appeal of doing that in, say, Paris or even Nice. But Menton is a small town; the old town is basically above the water and minutes from the beaches. I would not want to deal with a change of apartments in that case, especially since you'd have to store luggage in town, if possible, between check-out and check-in.

We day tripped to Menton last October, and loved it. I agree with Balso -- one location. It is a small place and I see little sense in splitting the stay.

We're both suckers for old towns, but agreed when if return we wouldn't stay in Menton's old town. It's very steep, and there's not a lot of commerce up there (few restaurants, shops, etc), especially compared to just about every other old town we've visited. It's nice that it remains mainly for locals, but if it were us we'd stay lower and stroll up when the mood hits.

Menton is full of snowbirds in late March and early April; it's a great time to go. The furthest to the east in Menton you go, the more you have a sunny micro-climate, the warmest place on the Côte, that attracts a lot of northern Europeans in winter. A lack of availability may be why Airbnb offered a combination of two apartments.

This would give you two views and variety. If you don't mind carting your stuff around, why not. The beachfront sidewalk cafés should be setting up their tables around April 1.

Just how far from the beachfront place is it to the train station? You might want to see if it's closer to the Carnoles train station, instead.

Thanks everyone for your thoughts. Despite having to pack up after a week and a half, check out of apartment 1 and check into apartment 2, it's still appealing to stay in different spaces with different views and different neighbourhoods. We still have some time to think it over.

For reference, one place is about 850m from the train station, near the Basilica of Saint Michael, the other is by the Jardins Bioves. So, no issues with walking to these from the station.

Thanks again,
Peter

The Jardins Biovres has two traffic-heavy streets on either side. Be sure you are closer to the beachfront ( also bumper to bumper in season) . Two restaurants around there: one inside the Casino and another called La trattoria along the Jardins.

As Andrea said, going up to the Cathedral is quite a hike with luggage or groceries. The paving stones are slippery during normal times and extremely slippery when wet.

The Bioves gardens are ground central for the citrus festival. The timing of the stays will be critical, depending on how you feel about the peak time of year (either great or bad, depending on your persepctive). The two areas will have different feels, the old town versus a more modern, more trafficked main square/thoroughfare.
