Trip to France in September

I shall be taking a trip to France in September. Will spend 2 weeks near Nice and would then like to travel to the city of Colmar, France. I would like to know the best mode of transportation, ( I won't have a car). Would it be possible to go by train and not not go by way of Paris? I may have two weeks there and would like Ideas on places to stay... Not hotels and not hostels. What places can I see without a car. I am an amateur photographer. Am a senior citizen and love to travel. I have been to Southern France a few times but never to this area. I have used this forum many times in the past. Any advise would be most appreciated.

Vj,
I'd suggest you fly from Nice to Basel, Switzerland, or from Nice to Strasbourg, then take a train to Colmar.

If you don't want to fly, or want to visit another place enroute to Colmar, such as Lyon, you can take trains.

You may want to check train schedules here:http://www.sncf.com/en/passengers

Check here for flights: https://www.skyscanner.com/

I just checked the website above, & found an easyJet flight, Nice > Basel, for $49! (I used September 13, for my search)

Wishing you a wonderful trip!

Yes, it is quite possible to go from Nice to Colmar (Alsace) by train without going via Paris. Look times up on www.bahn.de (more user friendly than the SNCF site). Or look up trains and buy tickets on: https://www.captaintrain.com/en
Alsace is a lot more than Colmar. The wine villages along the Vosges foothills are strongly recommended. but this will require a car.
Also day trips to Strasbourg and Basel (both by train).
