Trip to France...Does it looks ok ?

Hi !
We will make a family ( 2 adults and 10 and 14 yo kids) in July and August of 34 nights.
Here is our plan:

Paris: 7 nights get rental car at the end
Honfleur: 3 nights and day trips to Etretat and Rouen
Bayeux: 3 nights ddays beaches and other stuff. We will make a quick stop at Mont St-Michel before heading to Dinan
Britanny : 11 nights ( 4 Dinan, 5 Quimper and 2 Vannes). We use Dinan and Quimper to explore the area around them,
Limoges: 1 night (stop in Oradour sur Glane)
Dordogne (near Sarlat): 4 nights
Auvergne (Mont Dore): 3 nights
Amboise (quick look at some châteaux) : 1 night
CDG airport : 1 night
Fly back home August 12

All our lodging (beside Amboise and Limoges) are in Airbnb so we can wash some clothes (we travel with carry on only), make some meals (breakfast at least)...

What about that ?

Are you planning on renting a car for the whole time outside of Paris? If so, for that long you might want to consider leasing a car instead of renting. Just a thought, but worth checking into as the cost may be lower than renting. When I did a one month trip around France (outside of Paris) I chose to take trains between major cities or regions and rent cars for shorter periods to explore around those areas. Doing this made it infeasible for me to lease a car, but I would have if I had wanted to keep the car for the whole time. I must say that I did feel that Brittany really needed a car to explore so I did rent a car for my 12 days there.

On the whole, your itinerary looks wonderful to me, only a couple of one night stops and lots of variety.

I think this looks great. Two caveats: be sure the kids know about Oradour sur Glane, what happened there, what to expect. We found it a very emotional visit as our guide recounted the nazi atrocities. Also, assuming the COVID testing upon departure is still in effect (lets hope not) you’ll need to account for more days and possible school absences if you need to quarantine.

Nancy: Thank for the answer. About the car, we already made the car reservation and we got a great price (hope it will work when it's time to get the car).

Alan: Thanks for the answer. The test on return is not something we have to think about since we dont have to do one here in Canada. About Oradour, i'm an history teacher so I guess I can prepare our kids for that,

@ mathemilu - This looks quite good to me. Your focus is on parts of France that I am very keen on visiting next time I'm there (I've been to other parts of the country, but never to Britanny and the Atlantic Coast beyond Mon St Michel). You are looking at a lot of driving, but I assume you and the kids are prepared for that.

My only suggestions:

  1. I am convinced that the best way to see Mont St Michel is to avoid the crowds (I suspect this year the crowds will be worse than ever, you are going at the very peak of the peak season). Arrive at MSM late afternoon, check into one of the hotels on the Mont itself. Enjoy the place in the evening with virtually no tourist crowds. Sleep, wake early, enjoy the Mont again for a few quiet hours in the early morning. Depart when the crowds start arriving around 9 am. The hotels on the Mont are not the greatest, and they are overpriced for what you get, but you get location location location...for a once-in-a-lifetime experience, I think it's really worth it.

  2. Consider giving at least another day (maybe two) to the Loire Valley and more chateaux. One night in Amboise won't give you a chance to see enough of them. If you're going all the way to Amboise to see chateaux, it's worth investing another day at minimum.

Have a great trip!

FYI car leases. The timeframe is backed up several months to take possession of a leased car. Production is behind and these are new cars,

Hi david and thanks for the answer !

We have think about staying at the MSM but there's nothing under 475$ per night which is a bit steep for us ! Amboise is on our way back to Paris, only a small detour so we see it as a bonus and not as something we will not see enough.

For a history teacher and the kids a visit to Château du Clos Lucé in Amboise, the final home of Leonardo da Vinci is not to miss to my idea. There are replica’s of several machines he invented on display. Chambord is clearly visible from the road, a pitty the chimneys are under repair and surrounded by scaffoldings but the place remains nevertheless impressive to see.

There are a lot of toll roads in France, except those in Brittany are toll free and the A20 from Vierzon all the way to some 20km south of Brive-la-Gaillarde.

About MSM: I stayed on the mainland in B&B Le Rayon de Soleil in Bas Courtils, for me it was very good value for the money. https://lerayondesoleil.monsite-orange.fr/page-566d791a06fb4.html
