Must have done something wrong - thought I posted this earlier? Just decided to change where we are going - would like feedback on the following itinerary for possibly May. Fly into Paris and spend two nights there (we've been to Paris before); take the train to St. Malo and ferry across to Jersey; stay on Jersey for several days and then go to Guernsey to spend one or two nights, seeing Guernsey and some of the islands; back to Jersey to ferry across to St. Malo and get a rental car. Spend several days seeing sites, e.g. Dinan, Honfleur, Rouen (where we will drop the rental car); back to Paris for one last night before flying home. Does this sound like a good itinerary? ( We have been here before and done Bayeaux, the battlefields and Mt. St. Michelle so will not be doing these sites this time). Thanks. Any advice would be appreciate4d.
Decades ago I traveled from France to England via the Channel Islands, visiting Jersey, Guernsey and the car-less Sark. I remember enjoying the trip, though the details are lost in the mists of memory. I had an unexpected overnight in St. Malo because a ferry was canceled, and I remember thinking that St. Malo was very picturesque and could have used more walking-around time. I have no idea what it looks like these days, but I'm sure the historic buildings and wall are still there.
When I visited the Channel Islands I somehow did not know that they had been occupied by Germany during World War II. I'd like to re-visit them to learn more about that period. Pretty much all I know (or think I know) comes from the novel, The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society, which is partially set in wartime Guernsey. It is not great literature, and I have no idea how accurate it is, but I enjoyed the book.
A Channel Islands resident named Molly Bihet (now an elderly woman) has written a couple of books remembering her experience as a young girl during the occupation. See http://www.get.gg/acw/
