Hello!
We booked our flights yesterday to arrive in Lyon in September. Trying to plan the rest of our trip at this stage. Possible stays to use as a base after Lyon will be , Avignon and then head up to Paris via the TGV for the final leg of our journey.
We would love to visit Chamonix ; would it be easier to get there from Lyon or maybe from Avignon?
We will not be renting a car, and will be relying on trains / organized trips / hiring a driver etc.

It's definitely easier from Lyon, but it still takes a while, about 4.5 hours by train (Lyon-Bellegarde-St Gervais-Chamonix). Buses may be faster, but not sure who serves that route.
It's an easy drive from Lyon to Chamonix. My husband's family lives just outside the city near Lyon airport. It took us 2hrs by car to reach Chamonix last summer. Only 2 tolls and beautiful scenery. Don't miss Annecy!
We're going back this month! You will love it there. Look into staying at the Hameau Albert 1er.
I'm doing Lyon-Chamonix in September. Check out the Flixbus website for bus schedules and prices. I'm paying C$30 for a reserved seat on a direct route for a four hour ride. Bon voyage!
