Hoping someone can advice us about the best option for travelling from Avignon Central to Marseille Airport. Ideally we would like to be able to catch a direct train from Avignon to the airport.

The best thing to do is to download the SNCF app and check schedules. Make sure to get off at the Vitrolles airport station, not Saint Charles in Marseilles itself. Then, you take a short bus ride to the terminal. the sncf app is really easy to use. enter your cc information and you will be set with ticket purchases as well. this summer i took a 6:00 am train from alres to the airport for a 9:40 flight with no problems whatsoever.
