Hi, My boyfriend and I have booked a 9-day trip to Switzerland/France this October. (Lots of time to plan!) We are flying in to Geneva and out of Paris. Our initial thought is to fly in to Geneva and spend a day. Head to Chamonix for a few days and then head to Paris to meet friends for a 30th birthday celebration (the point of the trip). I guess I have a plethora of questions, so I guess it is easiest to just list them out. (Sorry in advance!)
What is the easiest way to get from Geneva to Chamonix? I've heard renting a car and then dropping off in another country comes with a crazy expensive free. So is there a train? Or is one of the transit services I've found online the best?
Will there still be places open in October in Chamonix or will the town be dead for off-season? I know there won't be skiing yet, but hopefully it will be decent still to hike? And I saw year round horse back riding.
What are the best suggestions to get from Chamonix to Paris? I know there are trains, but I would love to be able to rent a car and drive so we can take our time and make stops if we want. Would there be any outrageous hidden fees/charges since this would all be in France? Anything special you need to rent a car and drive in France with a US drivers license?
We are probably pushing it with only 9 days, but would it be worth it to stop in Dijon (or open to suggestions for other French towns on the way from Chamonix to Paris) for a night?
And of course, open to any and all suggestions for good hotels and great places to eat in any of these towns! I've already compiled huge lists so its always nice to hear peoples favorites so I can try to narrow places down.
Thank you!
