We need to get from Sarlat-la-Canéda to Arles. We have looked into train travel and there are no good alternatives on the day we want to travel. I’m not really crazy about driving in Europe although we will have a car while we are in the Dordogne. I’m considering driving to Arles. Has anyone had any experience in making this drive.
Start by taking the bus to Souillac, from there it is pretty easy to get to Arles. A couple of daily connections with one change in Toulouse that take around 6 hours, as well as a few slower ones.
The most effective is to keep the car and drive to Arles. It's the highway almost all the way (there are tolls)
From Sarlat join the A20 motorway at Souillac and take direction: Toulouse.
In Toulouse continue towards Montpellier (motorway A61 then A9)
Arles is 1 hour after Montpellier.
If you leave early you can even stop halfway in Carcassonne (1 hour after Toulouse) and see the medieval city.
The only problem might be traffic if you are traveling on a weekend in July and August.
Either keep the car until Arles as suggested, or drive to Toulouse and drop the car at the train station, then take one of the few daily trains to Marseille: they are direct and stop in Arles.
