We are spending 2 weeks in Montpellier with a car, but need ideas of how to get to Lucca, Italy. We do not need or want a car in Lucca. I have checked flights ,but have not found anything that is worth doing ( time wise and cost wise) we do love trains and are not opposed to driving part of the way if necessary! I am finding this very much harder than planned and do need your help! We are open to ALL suggestions! Thanks!!!
Easiest would probably be to drive to Nice or Monaco and drop the car and proceed by train. There is an afternoon connection with train changes at Ventimiglia, Genoa, and Viareggio that takes 6 1/2 hours.
I agree with Sam's suggestion to drive as far as Nice. If you do the whole trip by train, it takes 12-14 hours with 4-6 connections. You can try www.skyscanner.com for flights, but I did not immediately find anything cheap from Montpellier to Pisa or Genoa.
Maybe the Toulouse airport?? It's bigger than Montpellier.
There's a nifty website rome2rio.com that gives various travel options between locations. Check out this link http://www.rome2rio.com/s/Montpellier/Lucca but note that the bus runs only 4 times a week.
Shows bus is the fastest but gives train and plane alternatives as well. Bus trip is about 10 1/2 hrs (train 11 1/2) and costs $74 most likely cheaper than gas and tolls to Nice.
