Traveling from Bayeux to Bordeaux

After a few days in Paris, then 2 nights in Bayeux exploring the historic beaches, we will be heading south to Bordeaux. We have to arrive the same day we leave in order to make an engagement. Is it too far to drive? We would like to explore the countryside, stop at a few villages, etc - but maybe that plan is too ambitious. Would we be overextending? Maybe this is too far for a leisurely "Sunday drive."

If not a car, what about a plane? Anyone know if there is a direct flight from somewhere up there to Bordeaux? Haven't had time to check on flights yet - just beginning to work out details for this part of our trip - but thought I'd ask for some opinions first.
Thank you!

The only flights to Bordeaux are from Paris. So you just drive or take the train from Bayeux

There are also flights from Caen to Bordeaux. One nonstop daily but you've got to by tickets early to get a good price. Driving to Bordeaux is about 6 hours on the road. You can check routes and estimated cost on ViaMichelin.com.

Or take the train back to Paris, transfer to Gare Montparnasse, and the train down to Bordeaux. As of this weekend (I think the first trains on the new schedule start July 3), the train between Paris and Bordeaux will only take 2 hours and 4 minutes (down from three and a quarter hours currently)! Bordeaux has never been "closer."

A Bayeux-Bordeaux train connection that avoids Paris (and changing stations in Paris) departs about 9:20, connects at Caen and St. Pierre-des-Corps, and arrives about 16:00.

Will you need the car for further driving near Bordeaux?

I read about the new trains cutting the Paris-Bordeaux time down to 2 hours, and was amazed. We took that train last year and I thought 3 1/4 hours was terrific, given that it's well over 300 miles and takes 6 hours to drive. In comparison, from where I live it's a little over 100 miles to Boston, you can drive it in 2 hours, and the train takes over 2 hours.
