Traveling by train from Arles; wishing for Chamonix, but it appears too far away to make the Chambery to Italy connection, in our time frame; so looking for a compromise place for two nights...

If you really want to stay in Chamonix, then maybe you can adjust your Italian destination for the next day. The TGV from Chambery to Milan runs about 9:40 and 13:40, if you're aiming to connect to that train.
