Traveling by train from Caen to Paris

We are dropping off our rental car in Caen and traveling to Paris by train in June. It would be nice to have some flexibility as we do not know how long a process dropping off the rental car will be etc. Do we need to buy our train tickets ahead of time to save money? There will be five of us. Thank you!

Tickets booked ahead can be cheaper, but the full fare for this route is "only" €37 per person when purchased on the spot. Other than advance discounts, there's no need to book ahead; seat assignments are not required and the trains run about hourly.

Hi,

For Caen to Paris buy it on the spot. I've always done that going this route. If you think the train is going to be crowded, it certainly can be depending on the time of the route. You stand or go to the next coach (voiture) if you all want to be together, or you separate. Buying in advance there is no savings just as no reserving of seats since it is a TER train, (regional). It's first come first serve when it comes to seats.

This route is now mostly served by InterCity train with advance discounts available, but I still wouldn't bother booking ahead if you prefer flexibility.

We paid 15 Euro for tickets bought 3 mos in advance - they are about 35 bought at the last minute. I'd return the car in Paris, perhaps CDG with 5 people. Why pay even 75 Euro for train rather than just dropping the car at CDG? Note that the Caen Rental agencies are closed for a very long lunch.
