Please give me some suggestions on which would be a better way to head to Cannes. From Annecy through France or from Chaminox through Italy. Would like to stop along the way here and there.
I have only driven Nice to Chamonix through Italy and the scenery was beautiful. Large hills/small mountains with little fortresses/castles built at the top. Plus we stopped at an Italian rest stop and the pizza was not bad. Better food than I got from the French rest stop this summer.
May I ask if you drove through the tunnel in Italy? Seems like the tolls are quite a bit higher driving through Italy vs. Driving through France
Check the rental prices. If you rent in ChamOnIx, there's usually a high-altitude surcharge. How many days are you allocating to the drive? You can use viamichelin.com to estimate fuel costs and tunnel/road tolls.
There are many many tunnels on the way into Nice and then Cannes if you go through the Italian route. Or do you mean the really big tunnel - the Mont Blanc tunnel - which has always had really high tolls.
The the horrific fire in the Mont Blanc tunnel a few years back there have been strict speed limits and distance between vehicle requirements which are also strictly enforced.
We are renting the car at Geneva airport. If we stay in Chaminox the first night of arrival this may be best. It sounds like driving through Italy is much more expensive than staying in Annecy the 2nd night and driving through France to Cannes. Would you agree?
