Travel in France

What is the most efficient way to travel from Lyon to Nice? How long does it take by train or by car?

Many thanks.

By train.. about 4.5 hours.. and rates depend on when you travel.. rates can range from 30 euros to 70 or 80 euros at the dates I am looking at.. look at the SNCF site.. ( French railway)

According to viamichelin.com by car it takes about 5 hrs (give or take depending on traffic, etc) and costs approx $100 in gas and tolls.

The cheapest train tickets can be purchased from the SNCF website around 90 days before you travel. Note that these are strictly limited to a specific train and if you miss that you'll have to pay the full fare, so this may be a bad idea if you are flying into Lyon and travelling immediately.

Occasionally US credit card holders have reported difficulty in buying tickets from SNCF, if so try www.capitainetrain.com.

There is a long-distance rail station at Lyon Airport but it has a relatively limited service. Nevertheless, try looking for trains from "Aeroport Lyon Saint Exupery TGV".

If you do buy train tickets in advance, you can pick them up at any national railway office in France that can print out tickets, which saves some time. Do not have them mailed to you.
