Travel guides for Brittany

I am interested in a group tour of Brittany. It seems to be a region of France that is not well traveled and I would love to go there.

I did a tour to Brittany with Road Scholar in 2017 but it is one of the trips they have not re-established since Covid. It was 2 weeks covering Brittany and Normandie. I have my fingers crossed they will bring that one back soon as it was excellent.

I am booked on a Seymour Travels tour of the Loire Valley, Brittany and Normandie for Fall 2024. Mark Seymour is a former Rick Steves tour guide (I think he did his last Rick tour this summer) and I think all of the guides who work with him are either current or former RS guides. This year I did 2 of his tours, one of Northern England and the one visiting the Scottish Islands of Orkney and Shetland. They were both excellent. There were 5 tour members on the Northern England tour and 10 on the Orkney/Shetland tour.

I initially chose Brittany because I am interested in neolithic sites and there are the Alignments at Carnac plus many more sites in that geographic area. I really enjoyed that plus the whole Breton culture! I hope you can find something to suit you!

We searched for tours specific to Brittany too. Most were covering a very small section of Brittany combined with Normandy where we have been already. We found a company which offered an exclusive Brittany trip but haven’t pursued it yet , Slow Tours.

"It seems to be a region ...not well traveled...." Brittany is basically off the North American tourist radar. That is all the more reason you should go there. Admittedly, I have not visited there either. The " not well traveled " reason has nothing to with it.

The Rough Guide has a book covering Brittany. You may find it helpful.

I spent 12 days in Brittany about 10 years ago and I found it one of the easiest areas to do on my own as an independent traveler. A car is pretty much a must for Brittany but the driving was easy and I had no problems as a solo traveler, even without a navigator. Sure, I got lost a couple of times but had no big problem getting back on track. I did not have a GPS in the car and used paper maps (the Michelin maps were excellent) and also navigated a lot using the road signage which I found quite good throughout Brittany. I don't think I ever even considered a guided tour - mostly because of my limited budget, but also because I'm sure no tour other than a custom private tour would have visited all of the specific locations that were on my radar.

This is just to say that if you can't find a tour that meets your needs, doing it on your own is very easy and quite feasible. The main issue would be doing a lot of research to know exactly where you want to go and what you want to see. Brittany is a large area and I ended up using 3 bases in order to explore the areas I was interested.

It remains one of my favorite trips of all time and I would go again if I could to see the things I did not have time for.
