Travel from Paris to Amboise

Hi,

I am planning to visit Loire Valley in the month of May. I have booked my accommodation at Amboise. I will be reaching Paris, Nord from Amsterdam at 5:35 PM. Please suggest me mode of travel from Paris to Amboise, such that I can reach Amboise within 9:30, since checkin in the Hotel is possible only till that time.

Thanks in Advance

Looking at a random date in May (May 15), could be a challenge. The only practical train is a TGV from Gare Montparnasse station at 6:35 pm to St Pierre des Corps, connecting to a train to Amboise, arriving at 8:17 pm.

So that gives you 1 hour to get from Gare du Nord to Gare Montparnasse. They are connected by the No 4 Metro line, but there is still a bit of walking on either end. RATP suggests 5 minute walk from the platforms at Gare du Nord to the No 4 line platform, and 7 minute walk on the other end. There is a moving walkway part way from the No 4 platform at Gare Montparnasse, but you have to plan that it might not be running. It happens. So over all, it can be done in 30 minutes. 5:35 pm could be rush hour in Paris, so a taxi might even be worse.

If you miss the 6:35 pm train, there is one at 7:35, but with the connection at St Pierre des Corps, you would not get to Amboise until 9:17 pm, probably too late to get to your lodging by 9:30 pm. In that case, since you arrive at St Pierre des Corps at 8:39 pm, you could take a taxi from there. It is not too far, only 10 minutes on a train, so a taxi could get you there in time, if for a bit more money.

Are you renting car ?
The TGV from Paris goes to Tours (St Pierre des corps) and there are rental agencies at the station
To get around Loire valley you do need a car especially if you want to visit the Chateux, Wineries

On the same test date of May 15, you also have this direct train option from Paris Austerlitz station. Reconfirm for your actual travel date, since this one is not the same every day in May.

Paris Austerlitz dep 18:37, IC 14067

Amboise(St-Pierre) arr 20:21

Nn matter which way you go, timing will be tight. If you know your way around Gare du Nord and Paris Montparnasse stations it should be easy. The trouble you're going to have is that both stations are big and sprawling, and although the Metro journey between the two is only 17 minutes, you will spend more time than that walking to the correct platform (once you determine which platform that is). I always allow an hour connection time.

Having said that, DB give this as a recommended route, so you should (note... should) be fine
Amsterdam Centraal dep 14:15 platform 15a
Thalys THA 9358

Paris Nord arr 17:35

Continue by Metro 4 direction Mairie de Montrouge transfer 55 min.

Paris Montparnasse dep 18:35

TGV 8319
St-Pierre-des-Corps arr 19:39

Transfer time 28 min.

St-Pierre-des-Corps dep 20:07
TER60012
Amboise(St-Pierre) arr 20:17

Once you are at Amboise you will have to factor in about 30 minutes walking to your hotel. Unless you are miraculously lucky there won't be a taxi, even if you ask the hotel to book one for you (which is recommended). I wouls also make sure I know the hotel's phone number in case you're delayed.

Thanks all for the response !

I think based on the Inter station travel in Paris and considering the rush hours, i think we will plan for the 7:10 pm train from Paris Montparnasse, which reaches Tours at 8:27 pm. As indicated we were planning to rent out a car in Amboise for site seeing. So any idea how much time it will take for this renting procedure and also regarding the driving license , do we need an international License. We are coming from India so just wanted to check on that part.

Or will it be advisable to take the direct train to Amboise?

Thanks in Advance

You won't rent a car in Amboise that evening. The car hire place is a 40 minute walk from the station and usually only rents out vans.

Amboise is really just a glorified village. It's set up for tourists who arrive on a bus or by car and depart the same day or next day

Car rental agencies at St Pierre des Corps do not appear to be open after 6 to 7 pm. So you may have to take the train to Amboise and get a car the next morning, perhaps taking the train back to St Pierre des Corps to find a rental location.

Tours is a much bigger town. You may be able to rent a car in the evening at the station there. My experience, however, is agent hours are limited - even in larger cities. You might catch a train into Tours, from Amboise, the next morning to rent a car?

A car is necessary for sight seeing. I did it by bicycle but that's not for everyone. You will need an international drivers permit.
